Northfield still tells the story of September 1876, when townspeople shot two of the raiders dead in the street and sent Jesse and Frank James fleeing west. Today the Cannon River town is better known for Carleton and St. Olaf colleges, while Faribault, the older county seat on the Straight River, anchors the farm country of south-central Rice County.
Arrests across Rice County are booked into the Rice County Jail, the county lockup inside the new Rice County Public Safety Center at 50 East View Drive in Faribault, MN 55021. The 76-bed jail opened in 2024 under the Rice County Sheriff's Office and holds people arrested by county deputies and by city police in Faribault, Northfield, Lonsdale, and Dundas. Booking starts a public record, and whether someone is released within hours or held to see a judge, the names of people in custody show up on the Rice County jail roster the Sheriff's Office publishes online.
Our Rice County mugshots page pulls the newest booking photos from the county jail into one feed, so you can see who has been arrested around Rice County lately.
About Rice County
Rice County was organized in 1853 and named for Henry Mower Rice, the fur trader and early U.S. senator who helped steer Minnesota into the Union. About 67,000 people live across its farmland and lakes, most of them in Faribault or Northfield. Faribault, the largest city as well as the seat of county government, grew from the fur-trading post Alexander Faribault built on the Straight River and is still tied to the Faribault Woolen Mill and its heavy wool blankets. Northfield, centered on the Cannon River at the county's northern edge, is the college town behind Carleton and St. Olaf and the longtime slogan "Cows, Colleges, and Contentment."
Northfield's best-known chapter is still that raid of September 7, 1876, when armed residents turned back the James-Younger Gang and ended its run through Minnesota; the original First National Bank on Division Street is kept today as a museum by the Northfield Historical Society. Rice County sits in the farm country south of the Twin Cities, with Dakota County and its southern suburbs along the northern line and Goodhue County on the Mississippi bluffs to the east. Both counties post their jail records for anyone to see, and you can reach the rest of them through our Minnesota mugshots hub.
