About Carlton County

Carlton County occupies a wedge of northeastern Minnesota just southwest of Duluth, home to about 36,000 residents across nine cities. The small city of Carlton is the county seat, but Cloquet, set on the St. Louis River, is by far the largest community and the county's commercial hub. The county was created in 1857 and organized in 1870, taking its name from Reuben B. Carlton, a state senator from the region in the late 1850s. Its signature landmark is Jay Cooke State Park, where the St. Louis River rushes through a rocky gorge spanned by a swinging suspension bridge that the Civilian Conservation Corps built in 1934. Part of the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation, home to the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, lies in the northeastern part of the county.

Forestry and papermaking have driven the local economy for well over a century. The Cloquet paper mill, today operated by Sappi, remains one of the area's largest manufacturing employers, and the city kept working even after the Cloquet Fire of October 1918 — the deadliest wildfire in Minnesota history — burned through Cloquet, Moose Lake, and much of the surrounding country. The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, whose reservation reaches into the county, is another major presence in the Cloquet area.
