De Queen owes both its name and its existence to a railroad: when the Kansas City Southern pushed through southwest Arkansas in 1897, builder Arthur Stilwell christened the new town an Americanized spelling of his Dutch backer, Jan de Goeijen. More than a century later, this timber-and-poultry county along the Oklahoma line still funnels every local arrest through one jail.

About Sevier County
The territorial legislature drew up Sevier County on October 17, 1828, and named it for Ambrose Hundley Sevier, a frontier politician who later represented Arkansas in the U.S. Senate. Lockesburg held the courthouse first, but the seat chased the railroad to De Queen in 1905. The town that grew around the depot now anchors a working-forest economy of pine mills and poultry plants, with Pilgrim's Pride and Tyson both operating here beside fields of corn and cattle pasture. Locals long billed the area as the Land of Lakes for the De Queen, Gillham, and Dierks reservoirs nearby, and the 27,500-acre Pond Creek National Wildlife Refuge guards some of the last bottomland hardwood left in the Red River basin. Hempstead County and the town of Hope lie to the southeast, while heavier dockets pile up over in Garland County and Hot Springs.
