About Saline County

Saline County was cut from the western edge of Pulaski County in 1835 and named for the Saline River and the salt-brine springs that early settlers boiled down for salt. Benton, the county seat, took root where the old Southwest Trail crossed the river, and its 1902 Romanesque Revival courthouse, designed by Little Rock architect Charles L. Thompson, still presides over the downtown square. The county's fortunes later rode on bauxite: from the 1890s until the last big mine closed around 1990, Alcoa and Reynolds Metals worked open pits around the company town of Bauxite, and local potters spun the region's clay into the swirled Niloak art pottery now prized by collectors. These days Saline is better known as a bedroom county for Little Rock, with Bryant ranking among the fastest-growing cities in the state and a population that has pushed past 123,000. Little Rock and Pulaski County sit just across the line to the east, and the same booming metro stretches north to Faulkner County around Conway.
