About Lafayette County

At roughly 545 square miles, Lafayette is the most compact county in Arkansas by area, a forested wedge in the far southwest where the Red River traces the western edge and Lake Erling spreads across the timberland below Stamps. Voters organized the county in 1827 and named it for the Marquis de Lafayette, the French general of the Revolution. Lewisville has long held the courthouse, while Stamps — the largest town — won a lasting place in American letters as the childhood home of Maya Angelou, who set I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings among its streets. Managed pine timber, cattle and poultry, and oil have carried the economy for generations, and prospectors now eye the lithium locked in the Smackover brine far underground. The Art Deco courthouse on the Lewisville square, raised with 1940s public-works money, is the only one in the state to share its grounds with a cemetery.
