About Woodward County

Woodward County spreads across the high plains of northwestern Oklahoma, and the city of Woodward—its seat and easily its largest community, home to about 12,000 of the county’s roughly 20,500 residents—acts as the trade center for a ring of smaller towns that includes Fort Supply, Mooreland, Mutual, and Sharon. Cattle and wheat have carried the economy since the open-range era, but what lies underground pays much of the freight: commercial natural-gas drilling began here in 1956, and an iodine-extraction plant that opened in 1975 has produced about 14 percent of the nation’s iodine. Just northeast of town, Boiling Springs State Park—its stone bathhouse and shaded trails built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s—is the county’s best-known retreat, and the old frontier military post at Fort Supply still lends its name to a nearby town and reservoir. The county also carries one of Oklahoma’s hardest memories: the 1947 tornado that demolished some two hundred blocks of Woodward, after which the town was rebuilt largely on the same grid it occupies today.
