Anchored by Fort Smith on the Oklahoma line, Sebastian County sits where Arkansas meets the western frontier. It is the fourth-most populous county in the state and the heart of the Arkansas River Valley, home to roughly 128,000 residents across Fort Smith, Greenwood, Barling, and Lavaca, a place whose story runs from the frontier court of Judge Isaac Parker to a modern base of manufacturing and river trade.
Anyone arrested in Sebastian County is generally booked into the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center, the jail at 800 South A Street in Fort Smith. The Sheriff's Office operates it through the corrections division, holding people arrested by county deputies, by Fort Smith and Greenwood police, by smaller departments in Barling and Lavaca, and by state officers working across the county. During intake, staff record each person's charges and bond and take the booking photograph that becomes part of the public arrest record.
To find out who is currently in the jail, search the Sheriff's Office online inmate inquiry by name, or call the detention office at (479) 783-1051 with booking questions. Our Sebastian County mugshots page collects recent booking photos from around the county in one place, letting you track arrests across Fort Smith, Greenwood, and the wider River Valley without visiting each agency site.
About Sebastian County
Organized in 1851 and named for U.S. Senator William K. Sebastian, the county is unusual in keeping two county seats, Fort Smith and Greenwood, each with its own courthouse and judicial district. Fort Smith, the larger seat, grew up at the meeting of the Arkansas and Poteau Rivers and is today Arkansas's third-largest city and the commercial anchor of the western River Valley, with manufacturing, distribution, and healthcare driving the local economy. Greenwood, Barling, Lavaca, and Mansfield fill out a county of about 128,000 people, the fourth-most populous in the state.
Fort Smith wears its frontier past openly. From 1875 to 1896 the federal court of Judge Isaac C. Parker, the so-called Hanging Judge, tried cases out of the city for the lawless Indian Territory just across the line, a chapter preserved today at the Fort Smith National Historic Site and the United States Marshals Museum on the riverfront. Just north, across the river, lies Crawford County, the other half of the Fort Smith metro, while Franklin County borders it to the east; you can also reach every county we cover through the Arkansas mugshots hub.
