About Izard County
Lawmakers created Izard County on October 27, 1825, and gave it the name of George Izard, a War of 1812 general later chosen as the second governor of Arkansas Territory. For fifty years the seat of justice refused to settle: it opened at Liberty, the riverside town now called Norfork and now part of Baxter County, then jumped to Athens near Calico Rock, on to Mount Olive, and at last to Melbourne in 1875. Melbourne's Art Deco courthouse, finished in 1940 as the only Arkansas courthouse raised under the New Deal's National Youth Administration, is reputed to be the one county courthouse in the nation still partly warmed by a wood-burning furnace.
The county covers roughly 584 square miles of the eastern Ozarks, where the White River cuts beneath the streaked stone bluffs that earned Calico Rock its name; that old steamboat landing turned railroad town keeps one of the best-preserved historic main streets in the region. About 13,600 people live in the county. Horseshoe Bend, a planned lakeside retirement community, is the largest town, while Melbourne holds the courthouse and county offices. Poultry and cattle farms, timber, and river tourism carry the local economy, and the silica-sand quarries that once loaded barges at Guion belong to its industrial past.
