On October 3, 1963, President Kennedy stood beside the newly finished Greers Ferry Dam outside Heber Springs and dedicated it in what proved to be his last major public appearance. The reservoir behind it reshaped this young Ozark-foothills county into a boating and fishing draw, and the Little Red River below the dam later surrendered a world-record brown trout.
People arrested anywhere in Cleburne County are booked into the Cleburne County Detention Center at 914 South 9th Street in Heber Springs, the lockup operated by the Cleburne County Sheriff's Office. The roughly seventy-bed jail takes in those picked up by county deputies, plus people delivered by Heber Springs police or state troopers; it keeps men for longer stays and sends longer-held women to the jail in neighboring White County. Each booking opens a public record that pairs a mugshot with the charges filed and the bond a judge sets before release. To check who is inside, an online roster of people in custody is published at cleburnearso.gov, and the jail answers at (501) 362-2596 about anyone still held.
About Cleburne County
Carved on February 20, 1883, from slices of Independence, Van Buren, and White counties, Cleburne County was the seventy-fifth and final county Arkansas ever drew on the map, and was named for Patrick Cleburne, the Irish-born Confederate general. The seat, Heber Springs, began as a mineral-springs resort whose guests once rode the Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad in to drink the waters. The valley stayed sleepy until the federal Corps of Engineers closed Greers Ferry Dam in the early 1960s and backed up Greers Ferry Lake; clear coves, Sugar Loaf Mountain rising from the water, and the trout-rich Little Red River have driven a tourism, cattle, and poultry economy ever since. About 24,700 people live here, many of them along the shoreline. For records from the surrounding Ozark country, open Van Buren County, which holds the lake's western arm, or Faulkner County to the southwest toward Conway.
